The Alabama Chapter extends its sincere congratulatulations to one of this year's scholarship recipients, Eddy Leon.  We look forward to following Eddy's progress as he works towards building a bright future within the Public Works field. 

Each year, Public Works professionals from around the State of Alabama gather at the annual APWA Alabama Chapter Convention to network and discuss common issues. We welcome you to join us, as many of the products you offer help to make our jobs easier and run more efficiently. Without our vendors, the Conference would not be near as informative or exciting (or fun!) as it is now. We truly appreciate your participation and enjoy the time you spend with us. For those of you who have participated in the past, this year our general program has some changes. The dates of the Conference are June 16-20, with the vendor show on Thursday night, June 19th. The fellowship continues into our Jerry C. Drake Golf Tournament scheduled to begin Friday morning, June 20th. A discount is offered to our vendors who register for both events. The format of the vendor show will be similar to the last couple of years. We have a DJ scheduled to appear and there will be finger food for all, as well as the fun and games and fellowship we all enjoy.

Do you have your NIMS training? Are you in compliance? Do you actually know what to do if an event occurs in your county/municipality? Have you had the classes but don’t quite know where to start? The APWA Alabama Chapter is happy to announce the 2008 Annual State Convention to be held in Orange Beach, Alabama during the week of June 16-20, 2008. Our theme this year is “Public Works as First Responders.” We are happy to announce our Certificate Course this year will be taught by Mr. Allen Kniphfer with the Jefferson County Emergency Management Agency. He will be leading a NIMS equivalent course on a mock tornado event, and will address all items from where to start as soon as you find out about possibility from the weather report to follow up well after the event. We are planning a mock exercise to coincide with this class. A tornado is a common disaster event that can happen ANYWHERE in the state, so while I hope you never have to deal with such a tragedy as seen in Enterprise, the likelihood is there that your community will see this type of weather sometime in your career. Will you know exactly what to do to maximize your assistance? We will also be offering an alternate track of courses addressing Public Works from the Fire and Rescue perspective, The Minnesota Bridge Collapse and its effect on Alabama, and other topics that have been requested or have not been offered in a few years. We should have something for everyone, so please join us for this exciting event. Soak in the beach air while gaining required continuing education credits for your license and required certifications for your jurisdiction. And, most importantly, meet people who share your experience and may have suggestions to offer on what worked for their city. The Alabama Chapter of the American Public Works Association, in keeping with its objectives, will award one or more $1,500 scholarships for 2008. Scholarships are presented to deserving students striving to complete educational requirements for a career path in public works. These scholarships are provided for basic degree work only, and are not available for post-graduate academic pursuits. The applicant must have attained Junior status, with a minimum of one (1) semester or (2) quarters remaining to graduation, not including the currently enrolled term. Please make students in the appropriate departments aware of this scholarship opportunity.

The deadline for applications has been extended to May 1, 2008. The scholarships will be awarded at the annual APWA State Convention held in June, 2008.
